Greetings from Cape Cod where the temperatures are finally reaching 60 degrees (on some days) and spring is in the air. With spring migration underway, we are celebrating the change of season! As we move nearer to the month of May, the wood warblers have begun to arrive and there are already reports of Pine, Palm, Northern Parula and Yellow Warbler, as well as sightings of Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. During the month of May, most Cape Cod birders will make early morning pilgrimages to the Beech Forest in Provincetown, a highly productive migrant trap during spring.
A few American Oystercatchers and Greater Yellowlegs have been reported, and Ospreys are paired up and nesting cape-wide. The Cape Cod Bird Club monitors three nest box trails and we have nesting activity at all three. Eastern Bluebirds and Tree Swallows have built nests and Black-capped Chickadees are exploring the boxes too. Our volunteer monitors are out one or two times a week to record the activity. Happy Spring and Good Birding to you!
