Trip Reports

March 25, Saturday – Cherokee and Table Mountain – Gaylord Grams led a small group on a day that began with brief showers but quickly cleared with good weather prevailing thereafter.  They started at the historic town of Cherokee; then stopped at ponds, streams and an inland lake before reaching Table Mountain.  They saw approximately 50 bird species, 10 waterfalls and carpets of yellow wildflowers.  Some of the birds seen were Wood Ducks, Ring-necked Ducks, White-throated Swifts, a flock of Horned Larks and an abundance of Western Bluebirds and Meadowlarks.

April 2, Sunday – Sutter Buttes – Tim Davis, from California State Parks, led the group on a wonderful day hike into the Sutter Buttes’ Peace Valley.  The early morning drizzle stopped and the rain gear disappeared into day packs.  They saw 47 species of birds, walked to a historical cemetery, saw Indian grinding holes, an Indian ceremonial site, the remains of the homestead, and listened as Tim explained geological formations, feral pig issues, the Buttes’ historical importance to Native Americans and the influence of incoming settlers.  Notable birds included a Golden Eagle, Wood Ducks, Phainopeplas, and a close look at a Lark Sparrow bathing in a puddle.

April 9, Sunday - Genetic Resource Center – Audubon members took part in a Chico State Birding Club bird walk on a kind of drizzly but still very “birdy” day.  The group spotted about 40 species in a half day, including Cassin’s Vireo, Townsend’s Warbler and Varied Thrush (this one on the CSUC campus).
