Sister Society (Cape Cod Bird Club) News

Greetings and Happy Holidays from the Cape Cod Bird Club!  Our mild fall days have given way to chillier temperatures and the winter birds are here.  In addition to the expected seasonal sightings we've had a few "special" visitors!  A few weeks ago 2 Townsend's Solitaires (from the west!) were spotted at a beautiful location in Truro known as High Head.  As of November 20th they are still present.  A male King Eider from the high Arctic is making an appearance in Sandwich in the Cape Cod Bay.  We tend to see at least one regularly during the winter season.  A Tundra Swan has also been seen the last few days in Truro, and a female Painted Bunting made a one day visit to a back yard feeder in N. Eastham on Nov. 19th.  Our expected winter waterfowl include Harlequin Duck, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, Long-tailed Duck and Common Eider, to name a few.  This fall American Coot have been seen in very high numbers whereas in prior autumns, the numbers have been rather low.  Our first Barrow's Goldeneyes of the season have been seen along with a small group of Redheads, both very special sightings.  Common and Red-throated Loons have made their return along with Pied-billed, Horned and Red-necked Grebes.  On the conservation front, the Cape Cod Bird Club is working with the town of Harwich's Conservation Trust, to establish and monitor a 40-box Bluebird trail.  This will be in addition to a 12-box trail located in E. Dennis.  A new development for the Club is the establishment of a Young Birders Club, in conjunction with the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History.  A preliminary meeting has been held and we are well on our way to creating an organization committed to encouraging youth to birdwatch.
