New Table Mountain Wildflower Book

Rather than try to describe this book myself, I’ll let the authors do it. From the back cover:

Table Mountain is a prominent landmark in Butte County, located on the eastern margin of the Sacramento Valley between the towns of Oroville to the south, and Chico to the north. Its distinctive form catches the eye -- an elevated tabletop with steep cliffs, set against the rounded hills of the northern Sierra Nevada.

To the uninitiated, a flower walk on Table Mountain can be an over-whelming experience. There are so many flowers! We seek to ease the burden by profiling approximately 60 of the common, showy species in bloom during the popular springtime viewing season. To broaden your view, we also describe the mountain's geologic and cultural history, ecology, and wildlife you might encounter along the way."

This book is first an illustrated field guide to the flowers of Table Mountain, designed especially for use by visitors from the general public. But it also includes a comprehensive list of all known plants on Table Mountain, for use by the more accomplished botanist.

I asked one of the authors, Samantha Mackay, about the book:

It was sponsored by the Chico State herbarium (Lawrence Janeway, curator) and Randy Rickert (widower of Joyce Lacey, local botanist). I and Albin Bills (field biology professor at Butte College) wrote it, and Larry Jansen (one of his students, now owner of Hearth and Stone bakery) illustrated it.

It is $10 ($9.32 + tax) and it is available at some of the local stores (Bidwell Mansion, Butte College bookstore, Oroville Chamber, etc.) I also have it on Amazon in the auctions section, and from the herbarium at http://www.csuchico.edu/biol/Herb/studies/number13.html

The proceeds currently are going to the herbarium to pay for the printing of the book.

Although not illustrated, there are also sections on Geology, History, Mammals, and yes!  Birds!
