We’re not going to have an Altacal meeting, Newsletter, or field trips in January, as we’ll all be busy with the Snow Goose Festival. It’s a great event; you should definitely come check it out, as it will be great, and give you whatever birding “fix” you need for the month!

Be sure to catch Pacific Flyway's amazing wild waterfowl display this time of year by attending the 6th annual SNOW GOOSE FESTIVAL January 28-30, 2005 in Chico and Red Bluff. This winter weekend will provide you with fun, adventure and learning with field trips throughout the North Valley, complimented by a series of workshops and presentations, fascinating exhibits, and a Young Naturalist activities area for children and families ensure for a rewarding experience.
Here in the North Valley we're fortunate to live in an area with such diverse habitats for wintering waterfowl and wildlife our festival celebrates this.
New this year is a Friday night Reception and Art Show at the CARD Community Center and our popular Saturday night "Gathering of Wings" banquet at the Sierra Nevada Brewery Big Room.
The keynote speaker for the Saturday night Banquet will be Bob McLandress, President of the California Waterfowl Association. M. Robert McLandress began work with California Waterfowl Association as their first biologist (and 4th employee) in 1985. He has been employed as President of CWA since 1998. In 2004, he was directing more than 45 employees and a diversity of programmatic areas including habitat restoration, research, education, public policy and fund raising. His vast knowledge of the ecology of wetlands and waterfowl ranges from the Arctic to Mexico. Bob has served as a member and/or chair of numerous committees dealing with waterfowl and wetland ecology in California, and as a lecturer in the Department of Wildlife Fish and Conservation Biology at UC Davis. He served as Chair of the Dean's Advisory Council from 1998 to 2002. A prolific writer, especially for CWA's bimonthly magazine, he has also authored dozens of scientific journal papers and technical reports on a broad range of waterfowl and wetland topics. Recently, Bob has rekindled an old interest in wildlife photography and several of his donated images are being used to raise funds at CWA Fundraising events.
