International Migratory Bird Day

Saturday May 8th 2004 - Celebrate with U.S. Fish & Wildlife. Sacramento River Preservation Trust, and Altacal Audubon Society.

There will be a Guided Walk at Sacramento River National Wildlife Refuge, Phelan Island Unit, from 8:30 a.m. to around 1:00 p.m.

What is IMBD?  It is an annual celebration of one of the most important and spectacular events in the life of a migratory bird -- its journey between summer and winter homes.  Started in 1993, IMBD is the hallmark outreach event for Partners  in Flight and  was created to focus attention on the need for action to conserve birds and their habitats.  It is recognized in Canada, the U.S., Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.  It has grown dramatically in the last decade, through bird festivals, bird walks, education programs, and other activities.

Why Celebrate? Migratory birds are some of the most beautiful, observable and remarkable wildlife that share our world. Celebrating bird migrations is your opportunity to introduce others to the wonder of birds and to help ensure that they will always be a part of our future.

Location? The Phelan Island unit is located off of Hwy 45 approximately 3 miles south of Hwy 32.  Turn (east) on County Rd. 23 and follow IMBD signs to a parking area. This riparian restoration site is an excellent place to view river species, canopy dwellers such as the Yellow-billed cuckoo and many other cup nesting birds that summer among the restored riparian vegetation.  Bring along your lunch to enjoy at the Sacramento River’s edge.

Reservations? Although this event is free, it is important to call and place your name on a participant list in order to access this closed area.  Bring water, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, binoculars, bird guides and a lunch, if desired.
