| President's Message |
Our current Board of Directors has several positions that are currently open. This has been stated in each of our newsletters for sometime now. We currently have someone who is interested in being our Education Chair this fall (please let it be so!). I want to give an example of what the EDUCATION CHAIRPERSON might do.
For that matter, if you would like to just assist the Education Board member with a single part of the education program this would be fantastic!
You could have just a small item to be in charge of, and yet anything that you can provide can have a huge positive impact! Here's an example - the National Audubon Society has an educational program called Audubon Adventures.
What is the Audubon Adventures Program? AUDUBON ADVENTURES is an environmental education program for
children in grades 4 to 6. Developed by professional environmental educators, AUDUBON ADVENTURES presents basic, scientifically accurate facts about birds, wildlife, and their habitats. It comes to you packaged as a Classroom Kit (serving 32 students) or Individual Kit (serving 1 student). The program is used by classroom teachers, after-school program coordinators, special education instructors, language arts teachers, and homeschoolers. Since its inception in 1984, over 7 million youngsters have participated in the program.
AUDUBON ADVENTURES Classroom Kits contain: Four separate packets of AUDUBON ADVENTURES, our innovative
environmental newspaper just for kids; All new topics each year, 32 copies per pack; Audubon's Animal Adventures, an entertaining and educational videotape from the acclaimed series seen on The Disney Channel; Classroom Resource Manual, filled with hands-on activities, duplicating masters, and research material; Classroom wall certificate, acknowledging the participation of your class in AUDUBON ADVENTURES; a classroom certificate; and Internet projects.
Cost: AUDUBON ADVENTURES Classroom Kit: $35; Classroom Kits serve 32 students; AUDUBON ADVENTURES Individual Kit: $19 - great for homeschoolers!
This last year, I had 3-4 request for some sort of educational program that teachers could involve their young students in. As the A. Adventures person, you would inform the individuals about this opportunity. Short, sweet, and simple! Meanwhile, you have freed up the Education Chairperson to focus on something else AND now potentially, a whole class of young students is exposed to some fascinating aspect of the world that they share with our important avian friends.
